PASTOR D’S LETTER September 13, 2020
Once upon a time, in the old days of computer games, people went to something called an arcade to spend their money. In the arcade there was a game called Frogger. The object of the first level of the game was to jump (as a frog) across a busy street and not get hit by a car. As the game progressed cars moved faster and streets became rushing rivers (if you fell in the river you died).
Frogger is a great metaphor for life. We can see our goal of safety on the far side, but often we feel like we are jumping around going sideways, backwards and forwards not really sure if we are getting anywhere. Then we fall in the water or get hit by a car and our life seems like it’s over. That feeling may have been accentuated over the past six months since Covid 19.
Wouldn’t it be nice if someone just built a bridge over the busy street or rushing river? GOD DID JUST THAT. The bridge is the cross upon which Jesus died.
The chasm between us and God’s heaven cannot be crossed by zigging and zagging a bunch of good works together. No amount of special offerings can put us in God’s good graces. The Bible says three things clearly. First, everybody sins. (Romans 3:23) Second, the wages of sin is death. (Romans 6:23) Third, the only way to salvation (avoiding receiving what we have earned – death) is found in trusting in Jesus as our savior and lord. In other words, Jesus’ death for us is the thing that bridges the hole of death we have dug for ourselves. There are many Scripture references which make this point reminding us that our salvation is God’s gift. But the one that says it most clearly is Acts 4:12. After healing a man lame from birth, the high priest asked Peter and John, “By what power or in what name did you do this?”
Their response was clear and concise.
“If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed…
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:9, 10, 12 NIV)
My prayer for you is that you will stop going sideways and backwards in an attempt to reach the unreachable, but will instead fix your eyes upon Jesus and live this life like Jesus is Lord. Live by faith now and live in faith forever more through faith in Jesus the Christ.
